짙푸른 카프리가 멀어져가는 모습을 보다 몸을 돌리면 어느새 소렌토의 거대한 절벽이 눈에 들어온다.

이 또한 해적의 침입을 막기 위함이었을까. 절벽위에 새워진 도시라는 말에 걸맞게 절벽에 딱 맞붙어 서 있는 건물들이 먼저 손님들을 맞는다.

공항철도가 인천국제공항부터 서울역까지 개통되는 올 연말부터 서울역에서 모든 항공 수속을 마치고 국외 여행을 떠날 수 있게 된다.

코레일 공항철도는 25일 "현재 인천공항에서 김포공항까지만 연결된 공항철도를 12월29일 서울역까지 연장 개통할 예정이다. 이 시기에 맞춰 서울역에 도심공항터미널을 운영할 계획"이라고 밝혔다.

서울역 도심공항터미널은 삼성동의 도심공항터미널과 같은 기능을 한다. 외국으로 떠나는 여행객이 항공편 탑승 수속을 할 수 있고 짐도 함께 부칠 수 있으며, 출국 심사까지 받을 수 있다.

이 모든 절차를 서울역에서 끝낸 여행객은 공항까지 직통열차(소요시간 46분) 또는 일반열차(소요시간 54분)를 타고 간 뒤 공항 여객터미널 3층의 전용 출국 통로로 들어가 보안검색만 받고 비행기에 몸을 실을 수 있다.

이를 위해 코레일 공항철도는 법무부 출입국관리사무소와 인천공항공사, 항공사 등과 업무 협의를 마무리했다.

탑승 수속은 일단 대한항공과 아시아나항공 등 국적 항공사를 이용하는 여행객만 가능하지만, 외국항공사도 도심공항터미널에서 탑승 수속을 할 수 있게 업무 협의를 추진하고 있다고 공항철도 측은 전했다.

코레일 공항철도는 도심공항터미널 운영으로 인천공항을 이용하는 지방 여행객들이 더 편리하게 외국으로 떠날 수 있을 것으로 보고 있다.

또 외국인 관광객의 서울 도심 관광이 한결 수월해지고, 인천공항에서 미주나 유럽, 동남아 등지로 갈아타는 외국인 여행객도 시간이 남으면 서울시내 관광에 나설 수 있을 것으로 기대하고 있다.

코레일 공항철도 관계자는 "지방에 사는 분들은 철도 여행과 항공 여행을 동시에 편리하게 즐길 수 있게 됐다. 또 시간을 정확하게 예측할 수 있는 철도만의 장점이 있어 환승 관광 수요도 많이 늘어날 전망"이라고 말했다. 연합뉴스
